Find Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
We want you to be fully informed about the many types of treatment and the high-quality care our board-certified surgeons provide at Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. You can get answers to many frequently asked questions on this page.
Why should I see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon instead of a dentist?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have substantial training in specialized areas of surgery that dentists, and even most other surgeons, do not have. The surgeons at Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery have years of specialized surgical experience and anesthesia training.
If I think I need oral or maxillofacial surgery, should I visit your office first, or should I talk with my dentist?
At Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we have a strong commitment to maintaining your personal dentist’s lead role in your dental and oral health care. That’s why we believe it’s important to be evaluated by your dentist before having almost any oral surgery procedure. We also do everything we can to keep your dentist—and, when appropriate, your orthodontist—informed about any procedures you may need.
What is your practice philosophy?
At Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our practice takes a highly personal and sincerely caring approach, while staying on the leading edge in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
What is guided oral surgery?
We perform guided surgery at Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery using the latest computerized technology that helps our surgeons work very precisely with your individual anatomy.
What insurance plans does Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery accept?
We accept most insurance plans. For a list of approved plans, visit our Insurance page.
What payment options are available for care?
At Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we provide the highest-quality care available, and we’re happy to assist you with payment options to make your care affordable. In many cases, insurance plans’ benefits for oral surgery are not sufficient to cover the total cost. To help and support you in planning your care, we offer several payment options.
Like many of our patients, you may qualify for a six-month, interest-free payment plan through CareCredit. Or you could qualify for low monthly payments as part of an extended payment plan. Also, when you’re signed up for CareCredit, you can use your plan to pay for care at any participating provider. This can help if and when your treatment involves other providers. Get more information at www.carecredit.com. Or you can apply for CareCredit online now at www.carecredit.com/apply/index.html.
If you have other questions about payment options, please don’t hesitate to call us at 512-992-1378.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Your initial visit with us is the consultation appointment. The consultation consists of a thorough examination, an explanation of your diagnosis, and discussion of your treatment options. On occasion, we can perform certain oral surgery procedures on the same day as the consultation. Of course, some treatments cannot be performed on the same day, including when there is a complex medical history or complicated treatment plan. We’ll let you know if your needs require treatment at a later date. IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
- Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays, if applicable.
- A list of medications you are presently taking.
- If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the necessary completed forms. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.
What should I expect with IV sedation?
If you’ll be undergoing intravenous (IV) sedation for your oral surgery procedure, a preoperative consultation and physical exam are necessary. Please eat or drink nothing for at least 8 hours prior to your procedure. Also, make sure to bring an adult to drive you home following your surgery.
If you have a medical condition—such as diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves, rheumatic fever, etc.—or if you take any medications, please alert our staff. Medications and existing health conditions are important to know about and consider prior to your surgery, as they can affect your risk profile.
Do you need the X-rays that were taken previously at my dentist’s office?
In a word: yes. If you have your X-rays, please bring them with you to your first appointment. If your dentist has your X-rays, you can request that they forward them to our office. If there isn’t sufficient time before your visit to process this request, please pick up your X-rays from your dentist’s office and bring them with you to our office. Should additional X-rays be necessary for your care, we can take them here at our facility.
