How does a tooth become impacted?

As teeth develop, they normally push through your gums (or “erupt”). Sometimes, a tooth is not able to break through the gum tissue and becomes impacted. Impaction is most common in wisdom teeth, but other teeth can also become impacted for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Crowding of the teeth
  • Abnormal positioning of a tooth or teeth in your jaw
  • Cysts or abnormal growths

When a tooth is impacted or doesn’t fully emerge, it can push against other teeth as it continues to grow. This can cause serious damage to those teeth, and can cause other teeth in your mouth to shift. If you have an impacted tooth, it’s important to be evaluated by your dentist or by one of our oral surgeons at Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Exposure and Bonding for Impacted Canines

Not all impacted teeth need to be removed. Sometimes, teeth develop in your jaw in the wrong position, or there is not enough space for them to erupt on their own. Besides your wisdom teeth, impacttion is most common with your canine teeth, which usually erupt by the age of 13.

When they don’t erupt naturally, impacted canines need to be guided into place by your orthodontist. Braces are typically used to create space for the tooth. Once there is enough space, our surgeons can perform an “exposure and bonding” procedure. During this procedure, we expose your tooth by lifting the gum tissue from it. Sometimes a baby tooth (or primary tooth) needs to be removed as well. Then, we attach a bracket to the impacted tooth that allows your orthodontist to guide it into its normal position.

The best care starts with early detection

It’s important for impacted teeth to be identified as early as possible. Most impacted teeth are discovered by your dentist during your regular dental checkups. Early detection typically leads to better treatment outcomes, and allows your surgery to be shorter and simpler, with a quicker recovery time.
