Expert Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Austin, Texas from Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

x ray of impacted toothWisdom teeth (or third molars) begin developing in your jaws at a young age, but they are not typically noticed until later, between your teens to early twenties. Oftentimes, there is not enough space in the jaws to allow these teeth to erupt, or fully emerge in the mouth, like your other molars. If left untreated, this can cause a variety of problems, including gum disease and bone loss near your back molars, decay, infection that can become life threatening, and in rare cases, cysts or tumor may develop.

To avoid these types of problems, it is recommended that most people have their wisdom teeth removed in their teenage years. This is because the teeth are easier to remove when you are younger, and younger patients generally have a faster recovery time. Wisdom teeth can still be removed at an older age; however, there is a relatively longer recovery time and greater likelihood of complications.

At Midtown Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we offer wisdom teeth extractions under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or local anesthesia, depending upon your needs and wishes, to provide the most comfortable experience possible.

What is an impacted tooth?

As your wisdom teeth develop, they often become “impacted”. A tooth is impacted if fails to erupt, or become fully exposed in your mouth. Wisdom teeth can be completely impacted, remaining covered by bone, or they can be partially impacted, with bone or tissue covering a portion of the tooth.
